None – this is the first game-production I’m working on, but I have many years of experience in server and network administration.

Featured Developer Jacob Andersen (Reto.RedBjarne)

Each week we’ll feature one of the developers from the team and tell you a bit about who they are and what they are working on.

retoredbjarne

First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals?
Reto.RedBjarne

What is your position at Reto-Moto?
Game Director.

For how long have you been working here?
From the beginning (that’s a bit more than 3 years I guess). We founded the company after leaving IO Interactive, but we had to sit around for a while waiting for our non-compete clauses to expire so not much work were done in the first period.

What games have you worked on?
I have been working on games since the high-school days (I’m an old man now), where I did a few terrible games for almost no pay. My first ‘real’ game was a 2d vertically scrolling shooter for the Amiga, called Banshee (released by the now defunct Core Design (Tomb Raider) in England). Then I did a few games (AMOK + Scorcher) for Sega Saturn together with a few of the other Reto-Moto-founders (Scavenger Inc. / USA) before we moved back to Denmark (Scavenger folded) to start IO Interactive. At IO I worked on the first four Hitman games as well as Freedom Fighters. I was Game Director on the Hitman series, and made graphics and gamedesign on Freedom Fighters.

Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
Softimage XSI, World Machine 2 (Base terrain), Visual Studio (for plugins for XSI), Flash Builder 4 (for the strategy game), Photoshop/Illustrator/Indesign.

What are your hobbies?
Ehh Hobbies? What I do when I’m not making Heroes & Generals? I teach a bunch of 7 year olds how to play ice-hockey a few times a week. Excellent sport. Fast, physical and requiring a lot of dexterity and coordination. I would also call the programming bit of my work a hobby :-) Let’s me use the left side of the brain once in a while.

What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
The fps part fits my taste perfectly, lots of vehicles and not-too-fast action on large terrains. I love Tanks :-) The strategic and tactical parts of the game is also something that I really like.

Featured Developer Rune Speich (Reto.Splixxen)

Each week we’ll feature one of the developers from the team and tell you a bit about who they are and what they are working on.

retosplixxen

First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals, and what’s the story?
Reto.Splixxen.
The full story behind it is an almost well-kept secret! But I can reveal it has something to do with Scrabble..

What is your position at Reto-Moto?
QA Manager

For how long have you been working here?
Since November 1st 2011

What games have you worked on?
I’ve been an active Alpha/Beta/Game tester for 15 years, but this is the first game where I’m paid for it!

Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
Mainly MS Visual Studio 2010, Notepad++, ingame debugging tools, Red Bull.

What are your hobbies?
Believe it or not.. Gaming! I’m also quite the movie addict.

What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
It matters if you win or lose. Instead of what you do in almost any other game – just logging on to a map and once done, you wipe the slate clean and start over.

Two recruits reporting from HQ

We are 2 boys from 9th grade at ‘Toftevangsskolen’, Birkerød, DK, and we have been the trainees of Reto-Moto for a whole week now. In the beginning of the week we were finding bugs in the game that we thought should be fixed and reported them as an issue. We found places in the game were there was missing textures – that means there was no graphic on the chosen object. But the game is not finished yet so it will improved over time.

We also attended a brainstorm meeting about the upcoming launch trailer. That was fun, because you never think about how much work and resources is used to make a trailer. We have of course also tested the game a lot, and we have been playing against other alpha-testers and giving them tips that we have learned this week.

In the evenings we played at home in game sessions – with players from all over the world.

We also helped designing a train-station in the game. We found some historical material to help making and designing the train-station. We saw how they made buildings and stuff e.g. the train-station. They use Autodesk XSI as 3D software to make the game look realistic and fun to play. It has been a great week here at Reto-Moto and we think the game is going to be a lot of pure epic awesomeness.

Featured Developer Jesper Wille (Reto.Hr.Wille)

Each week we’ll feature one of the developers from the team and tell you a bit about who they are and what they are working on.

retohrwille

First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals?
Reto.Hr.Wille. I sort of regret the “Hr”. though (“Hr.” is the danish expression for “Mr.”). It just doesn’t sit well with being a tough grunt such as myself.

What is your position at Reto-Moto?
I’m in charge of making all the weapons and vehicles that end up in Heroes & Generals. Manly the graphics aspects but I also work on their setup alongside with our coders.

For how long have you been working here?
About 3 years.

What games have you worked on?
Mainly the Hitman games, and a few unpublished titles as well.

Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
Softimage, MARI, Photoshop and a few In-house tools.

What are your hobbies?
This sounds unbelievably sad, but doing 3D. :)
Sometimes it feel like I’m getting paid to play with Lego all day. Having your work also be your hobby is a real blessing.
I also do a lot of fishing with a quite remarkable low amount of fish to show for it. :)

What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
Almost from day one the game has been fun to play and that has to count for something, but I would have to go with the strategy part of Heroes & Generals.

Featured Developer Peter Fleckenstein (Reto.FleCK)

Each week we’ll feature one of the developers from the team and tell you a bit about who they are and what they are working on.

retofleck

First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals, and what’s the story behind it?
Reto.FleCK – well it combines two passions in life: 1) myself (fleck) and 2) FCK (Danish football team).

What is your position at Reto-Moto?
I’m Game- and Level-designer.

For how long have you been working here?
I’ve been working here for 3 years from the very beginning of the re-structering of Reto-Moto.

What games have you worked on?
As many of the other guys I’ve been working on Hitman – all the way back from Hitman 1.

Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
To make a new level I normally start sketching with pen and paper, then a more formal sketch in Adobe Illustror. Then I proceed with creating the terrain for the level in World Machine 2 Professional, and when I’m happy with the general layout I bring the height map into Softimage XSI where the rest of the level construction is being made.

What are your hobbies?
I love to spend my precious spare time working on my house (leveldesign in real life :-) ) and watch my favorite football team FC Copenhagen.

What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
The idea of bringing the players closer to the development is great – and I like the short way from ideas to implementation (since we are self-publishing).
Also, I love that the outcome of each level you play actually is a part of a bigger picture instead of endless level rotations – that makes the killing more meaningful…. And I know for sure, that our Design Document contains a lot of new and interesting thoughts for the future.
