Graphic Department went to France

On the 4th of April at 15 o’clock the Graphic Department left the Reto-Moto office and went on a field trip to France.
The reason for us going, was to take photos of buildings and the landscape of Normandy so that we can do an accurate depiction of that area for the game.

We are planning bigger follow-up posts with more images as soon as we get the image tons of reference sorted.

So here is just a small teaser :)

Featured Developer Ask Stenum (Reto.Stenum)

retostenum First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals, and what’s the story?
Reto.Stenum. I was racking my brain, trying to come up with a gamertag, when it suddenly appeared to me, that I’ve been using my last name since high school. Whether this is because of my lack of imagination or me being self-centered, I haven’t figured out.

What is your position at Reto-Moto?
My title is Senior C# Server Programmer.

For how long have you been working here?
I started January 1st 2013.

What games have you worked on?
This is my first job in the games industry, but since I can remember, I’ve been digging around in SDKs, making small mods, and I’ve even written an article and some tutorials on Valve’s Source engine.

Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, Notepad++, Perforce (for version control) and so on.

What are your hobbies?
I’m a big fan of the Danish football team FC København, and watching the demise of our arch enemy is an extraordinary fun hobby at the moment. I also enjoy making music, but it seems casual gaming has come in the way of that, at the moment :D

What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
I really like strategy games and First Person Shooters, but it’s been all about modern warfare shooters the past years, and I miss the pace that for example the original Battlefield 1942 had. The combination of the epic warfare scale and the slower WWII pace that is Heroes & Generals has so much potential, and that makes it truly awesome.

What’s the best thing about working at Reto-Moto?
I love working in such a creative atmosphere and with really talented people, some of whom have been making games since I was a teenager, and who all share the same passion for computer games. Oh, and it’s basically the reason I chose this career :)

What are you working on right now?
I’ve been working on internal tools (the campaign map editor and a load tester), and an event handler for the chat until now. Much to come …

What are your favorite games of all time?
Half-Life is my all-time favorite, close followed by id’s Quake for nostalgic reasons. In the strategy genre I’ve really enjoyed the SimCity and the Civilization games. Oh and Diablo! And … the Rainbow 6 games! And … phew.

What is your favorite movies?
Everything by Tarantino, really, and the original Alien and Aliens. If Schwarzenegger is in it, it’s probably also worth watching.Yes, including Kindergarten Cop!! :D

Featured Developer Filip Lange Nielsen (Reto.Ratamahat)

retoratamahat
First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals, and what’s the story?
Reto.Ratamahat. As a teenager I was a big fan of Sepultura and especially the song Ratamahatta. At the time my IRC client wouldn’t allow nicks with more than 9 characters, so I shortened the inspirational name. I have no idea what ratamahatta actually means. It might be happen to be a swear word in some language (!). Or gibberish. I like gibberish.

What is your position at Reto-Moto?
I’m a level designer. I work with the action team, where I design and sketch levels, then build them using our tools.

For how long have you been working here?
I started in November 2012.

What games have you worked on?
Before I started at Reto-Moto, I worked on the game “FORCED”, which is being developed by BetaDwarf Entertainment.

Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
World Machine 2, XSI SoftImage, Gadwin PrintScreen, Google Drawing, pen and paper.

What are your hobbies?
Aside from gaming, in my spare time I play the guitar and dream about time travel.

What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
I really like the whole idea that the game has a campaign that is persistent. It keeps on going even when you’re not there, and like a real war, it isn’t settled in just an evening’s rotation of rote death-matches. I also think players can grow tight bonds and respect for each other on the strategic map as well as in combat, and any game that promotes teamwork is a good game. The concept of sending reinforcements, potentially having a fight last for hours, is fun and also feels very real.

What’s the best thing about working at Reto-Moto?
Every day I learn something new and get to face and solve new challenges. Working with professionals who don’t seem to flinch when met with any task.

What are you working on right now?
I’m working on my first Skirmish map and a script for easier updating our roads in SoftImage when there has been made changes to them in World Machine.

What are your favorite games of all time?
Sharing the first prize, we have Zelda: A Link to the Past, Final Fantasy VII, and Metroid Prime. I also have fond (?) memories from Resident Evil and Silent Hill!

What is your favorite movies?
The Shawshank Redemption, Fargo, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Twelve Monkeys, and Primer.

Featured Developer Lene Jung Kjær (Reto.CrazyCat)

retocrazycat

First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals, and what’s the story?
Reto.CrazyCat because I’m a huge animal lover and have 2 cats – and my friends call me Crazy Cat Lady (from The Simpsons). I don’t throw my cats at people though :-)

What is your position at Reto-Moto?
Games analyst

For how long have you been working here?
Since 2/1-2013, so I’m still very new to Reto-Moto and the world of computer games.

What games have you worked on?
I am completely new to the gaming world, since I have a PhD in biology – you know, Icelandic sweater and green rubber boots. But throughout my education I have done a lot of programming, analysis and statistics. Now I’m working on developing/investigating/running analytic tools for Heroes & Generals.

Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
I don’t take part in developing the actual game, my focus is analysis and statistics.

What are your hobbies?
Running, Thai boxing (although I haven’t practiced this in a while), spending time with friends, movies, reading books (I have quite an obsession with historical novels), history, animals – did I mention my cats :-) And of course now, I am hooked on Heroes & Generals!

What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
I’m quite new to the game so I still suck immensely at playing, but it definitely gets my adrenaline pumping. I think the graphics are exceptional – I absolutely love the lighting. And of course shooting people (a great way to get rid of aggressions) although right now it is mostly me getting shot!!

What’s the best thing about working at Reto-Moto?
So far – the people, everyone is really nice here and very professional. I’m still quite new to this line of work, so I’m sure it will be challenging, but I love challenges.

What are you working on right now?
Investigating analytical tools to use for analyzing and running stats on Heroes & Generals, remembering all my co workers names and faces and trying to understand what everyone is talking about when they use very specific gaming lingo (which is quite hard, actually!).

What are your favorite games of all time?
I’m assuming you mean computer games (otherwise it is Trivial Pursuit:-)) [Yeah, the interviewer forgot that non-computer-gamers exists, Ed.] – As I mentioned, I am not a hard core gamer but I have quite enjoyed playing Diablo and Age of Empires back in the days – I also played a lot of Doom when I was younger :-) Now of course it has to be Heroes & Generals :-)

What is your favorite movies?
The last of the Mohicans, The Shawshank Redemption, Leon, The Usual Suspects, Lord of the Rings trilogy, Star Wars (IV,V and VI), Moulin Rouge (for the girl in me), Gladiator, Highlander (only the first one – the rest sucked!), Blade Runner, the Matrix (again the first, I was not fond of the sequels), Stalingrad, The longest Day, Apocalypse Now, The Big Lebowski, and lots more…..

Featured Developer Christian Sinding Nellemann (Reto.sNell)

retosnell

First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals, and what’s the story?
Reto.sNell – A play on my name and the german word for ‘fast’ (misspelled).

What is your position at Reto-Moto?
Mobile Programmer

For how long have you been working here?
Since December 1st, so not very long. I am still finding my way around the code.

What games have you worked on?
None that people would know of. A mod for UT3 called The Witching Hour that died when UDK was released, and an artsy game about growing plants, as well as some GameJam games. So this is my plunge into professional game programming.

Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
Since we are developing for two platforms, we use MonoTouch and Mono for Android. This allows us to write everything in C#, and share a fair amount of game logic code across platforms. Apple’s rules means that the iOS version has to be built on a Mac, so I work on both OSX and Windows.

What are your hobbies?
Gaming, gardening, hiking, food, beer, and wine, music.

What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
The game makes you feel that you’re influencing the outcome of something greater than yourself. Winning a battle as Hero really feels like it has more purpose than just frags, and sending in troops as General feels cool too, since you know it will influence the experience of other players.

What’s the best thing about working at Reto-Moto?
The large amount of freedom in the day-to-day work, and the people here. Just the right amount of geek culture.

What are you working on right now?
Work on the mobile clients has been done by an external company up until now, so right now I’m shaping the applications up for their first release while figuring out how everything works in the system. Also, I attend meetings where we discuss the changes we’d like to make to the strategy game.

What are your favorite games of all time?
The original XCOM, Dune II, Colonization, Baldur’s Gate, Mount & Blade Warband with C-RPG mod, DOTA, Quake II Action and loads of others.

What is your favorite movies?
That’s tough. 12 Monkeys is definitely high on the list, but other than that, I’d rather name Shows. The Wire, Battlestar Galactica, Deadwood, that sort of thing.

Featured Developer Shaun Mechen (reto.scratchliquid)

retoscratchliquid First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals, and what’s the story?
Scratchliquid. Scratch is from an old inside joke and liquid is from solid snake’s bad ass brother liquid snake.

What is your position at Reto-Moto?
3D Artist. I am overlooking the weapons.

For how long have you been working here?
2 months.

What games have you worked on?
I have worked on a few unannounced games I can not talk about. But I used to work doing weapons on Interstellar Marines at ZeroPoint Software.

Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
Maya, Softimage and Zbrush

What are your hobbies?
I like the outdoors but I also like to build plastic model kits of WWII German armour when I am not looking after my little girl.

What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
WWII what more can I say.

What’s the best thing about working at Reto-Moto?
Having great support for something I love to do.

What are you working on right now?
Guns, guns and more guns.

What are your favorite games of all time?
I have a few ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64 games I love.
But more into this century I played a lot of Battlefield 2 and Company of Heroes.

What is your favorite movies?
Well I can’t say one movie but i generally love most WWII movies and I am not saying that because I am working on Heroes and Generals.

A room packed with ACTION!

What does the Reto office look like? – People

Ever so often people ask “What does the Reto office look like?”
(Splixxen! You just made that up! /Ed.)

We sometimes move around to make communication easier, for the people who needs to work together.
At the moment, one of the rooms is called “The Action Room”, where we have all the guys working on stuff for the action game; Level design, Vehicle design, Action game code, Animations, Stats, QA, etc.

So here’s a small glimpse into the world of Reto’s (messy?) workstations ;-)

The Rainbow-colored elephant watches closely as Reto.Leto tweaks the vehicle code.

Fix your bugs!

With every new build, there’s going to be some new bugs.
– Ancient developer proverb

Some of these will be easy to fix, some will be hard to fix and some are just plain boring to fix.

Hence the other Devs need a little motivation.

You can only ask people to fix something so many times and when cookies don’t speed up the bug fixing…
