Game Director’s Squad wrap up

Since the Squad System was introduced at the end of May we have been hard at work tweaking it and making optimizations to the games Render Engine.

We got hold of our Game Director Reto.RedBjarne and asked him to tell us a bit about the current state of Squad and the DirectX 12 update.

Game Director’s Response to Squad Feedback

The new Squad System was introduced to support teamplay. Having soldiers organized in a Squad with options for tactical teamplay, gives players the opportunity to learn from each other, give commands so that no one is left behind and for everyone to find their favourite role.

We grabbed Our game Director Reto.RedBjarne and asked him to explain a bit about the motivations and thoughts regarding the new Squad updates.

What we learned in the last few days is that this already works well, especially for newer and casual players. We hear stories about battles where players that never played together before, had a fantastic experience on the battlefield, each finding their role almost automatically, working together all the way. Unfortunately, this is not true for players, who were with us for a very long time. The limitations, which we introduced are a hard blow for every player who was used to, for example, change soldier type during the battle. We know now that we should have given all players, who have dedicated so much time enough experience on the Squad Ribbons from the start, so you would have been able to customize your Squad as you see fit.

Guderian build online!

We have rolled out the first version of the Guderian build. The main features that we have added is a ‘First Blood’ tutorial mission for new players and the Squad Leader functionality for more experienced players!

First Blood

The ‘First Blood’ mission is a short single-player mission that lets new players get to grips with the life of an infantry man in Heroes & Generals. They are shown how to pick up new weapons and destroy enemies, as well as how to handle hand grenades, anti-tank weapons and even the Anti-Air weapons. We also introduce how to adjust sights when using weapons with adjustable sights.

Intelligence Bulletin Vol 2 * No 43

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, this last week has been spent getting a lot of things fixed that we wanted to get done before the Holidays.

The Squad Leader commands are coming along nicely, we have locked down the features for the first iteration and we are talking about and designing the next iteration. Today Reto.Hr.Wille discovered that the Squad Leader binocular had a cone fire setup that resulted in soldiers often being told to attack and destroy the grass right next to the enemy tank :-) Killing an enemy Squad Leader has also made his way into the First Blood level as an objective.

There will not be an Intelligence Briefing next week as most of us will be recuperating from the orgy of food that is a traditional Danish Yule, while preparing to set off enough fireworks to to make night into day on New Year’s Eve :-)

Intelligence Bulletin Vol 2 * No 42

Icons done! Update from Perforce! Bugs fixed! Feature locked and committed! There is a LOT going on here at Reto HQ as we are working as fast as we can to get the features for the Guderian build done. But we also managed to get a videolog detailing the Felber build done. And so much faster than the last one. :-) If you haven’t already please notice the new music from our tame Beethoven – Jesper Kyd.

The community is really showing just how awesome they are. This week we have a fan-trailer made by K120 & a detailed account by Fontan of his visit to HQ. There is also a lot of progress getting done on both the Squad Leader feature and “First Blood” and we have been doing some quick iterations on how the user interface should look and work, both for the squad leader and for the squad members being led. We want to create a system where it is easy for a new player to have a fun experience by following the orders and guidelines from more experienced players. You can still do what you want, but you don’t have to worry about what to attack or where to spawn if you don’t feel like it.

MAJOR EMERGENCY! On Thursday right before lunch we ran out of sugar for our tea and coffee.
Nobody felt like venturing outside to the supermarket 300m away and buy some so we decided to stick with icing sugar until we had new groceries delivered. After noticing that my tea had a slightly odd consistency I noticed that icing sugar contains 20% potato starch…..
