Since the Squad System was introduced at the end of May we have been hard at work tweaking it and making optimizations to the games Render Engine.
We got hold of our Game Director Reto.RedBjarne and asked him to tell us a bit about the current state of Squad and the DirectX 12 update.
During the last few weeks we have received a lot of valuable feedback from you and we have implemented a series of improvement and tweaks to squad.
In the last weeks we have kept working on tweaking and polishing the Squad system based on player feedback and gathered data on how it performs in the live game environment.
With these updates (already on the live servers) we think it works really well and we have only a few extra tweaks and polished coming in the next update called Everhart! More about those in a future update!
Recent Squad Tweaks!
These tweaks all focus on making it easier for you to manage your squad and to help avoid leaderless squads getting stuck.
- Orders can now be given from all characters that have the squad leader unlock (rank 6).
- Ability to switch access-point is also available for squad leader cadets.
- If the squad leader/cadet has been missing from the squad for more than four minutes squad command is assigned to a new squad member.
- Added ready countdown.
- “Launch” button is briefly shown while 30 seconds timer ticks down.
- Even if a squad is not ready, the squad leader can select ‘enter combat’ and the squad will enter combat after 15 seconds
The new Squad System was introduced to support teamplay and for a lot of players this works really well. As our Game Director, Reto.RedBjarne, mentioned in the video we released on Friday, there are a number of improvements to the squads that a LOT of, especially veteran, players have requested! Today we roll out a number of hotfixes addressing a good selection of these!
Personal Squad Setup
You can now create your own squad and add that to the matchmaker, without adding a friend. The matchmaker will then try to fill open seats with other players. How do I do that I hear you ask?
The new Squad System was introduced to support teamplay. Having soldiers organized in a Squad with options for tactical teamplay, gives players the opportunity to learn from each other, give commands so that no one is left behind and for everyone to find their favourite role.
We grabbed Our game Director Reto.RedBjarne and asked him to explain a bit about the motivations and thoughts regarding the new Squad updates.
What we learned in the last few days is that this already works well, especially for newer and casual players. We hear stories about battles where players that never played together before, had a fantastic experience on the battlefield, each finding their role almost automatically, working together all the way. Unfortunately, this is not true for players, who were with us for a very long time. The limitations, which we introduced are a hard blow for every player who was used to, for example, change soldier type during the battle. We know now that we should have given all players, who have dedicated so much time enough experience on the Squad Ribbons from the start, so you would have been able to customize your Squad as you see fit.
The new update named ‘Devyatayev – Squad’ (named after the Soviet soldier Mikhael Petrovich Devyatayev ) is here! Here you can get a quick overview of all the new features we’ve added for you! The Videolog will start you off and we then continue with more details below!
The Devyatayev update brings the long awaited new Squad Feature, which actively supports and improves tactical teamplay. No player will ever be alone on the battlefield anymore, no matter if you just started playing or are a die-hard Veteran!
In the upcoming Devyatayev update (named after the Soviet pilot Mikhael Petrovich Devyatayev) we are introducing a new Soviet vehicle The T-20 Komsomolets! This is a tracked vehicle capable of carrying men and equipment into battle.
The new T-20 Komsomolets is available as a Terrain Vehicle for infantry (like the US M29 Weasel).
Looking through various lesser-known vehicles of WW2, the soviet T-20 stands out as a versatile terrain vehicle and artillery tractor. The added machinegun, as well as a bit of armor, gives it the option to defend itself against infantry!

As an extension to the matchmaking work required by ‘Play with Friends‘ and as part of the general effort in making the game easier to understand for new players we are working on adding tiers to matchmaking as has been requested by the community for a LONG time. So without wasting further keystrokes, take it away Reto.Hal9K (tier 3) – Reto.Robotron3000
To help avoid the situation where first-time players are being completely overrun by more experienced players, we are working on adding tiers into the action game matchmaking. This is also a benefit for the veterans, as they won’t be as frustrated with people new to the game who might not yet understand what “NMY pz3 at B2 app. B3” means. :-)
In the first iteration we will stick with two tiers, cleverly named: Tier 1 & Tier 2
