‘Rommel’ update is now Live!

The new build named Rommel (after the German field marshal Erwin J. Rommel) is live on the servers! So here’s a quick overview of the new features we’ve added for you to enjoy!

New Features

Generals and Officers

We have expanded the ranks all the way to Field Marshal and made major improvements to the strategic gameplay. Generals and other commanding officers are now characters that equip Assault Teams, starting with their own branch of the armed forces and then expanding to other branches. Read more about the Generals here.

New Weapons: FG42 & M1 Carbine

In the last build we re-introduced the paratroopers and a LOT of players asked for paratrooper specific weapons, these are here now; the German Fallschirmjägergewehr 42 and the American M1 Carbine. If you want to know more about these awesome new toys, take a look here.

New victory conditions

Looking at the map you will notice that there are more important cities marked with a star symbol (★). These are the strategically important cities that determine the winner of the war. To learn more about how this new feature works, take a look at this blog post.

Vehicle Wrench tool

For a long time a heavily damaged tank has just been a useless chunk of metal, most tankers would abandon them and try their luck on foot, but now you haev a choice! The repair wrench is available for Tankers, Infantry and Recon and can be used to repair damaged vehicles. This takes time and is best performed away from danger. If you want to know more about this terrific tool, read more here.

Official Twitch channel

We have started a Friday devstream on Twitch, where we will broadcast live from Reto-Moto HQ and show new features, answer player questions and maybe show off what we are working on for the coming builds. In case you missed our first episode, you can check out the recording on youtube here.

There is of course much more happening in the build, so continue reading for more details…

New Features

Paratroopers returning to battle

The Paratrooper class is now back! Their planes are now polished and looks awesome, and there is an AI that controls the plane, to let all paratroopers fight. Read more about the paratroopers AND their uniform personalizations here.

Uniform Variations

You can now customize your soldiers with new uniforms, as we have introduced uniform variations for some of the classes. In this update the US Recon, US Paratrooper, German Tank Crew, German Recon and German Paratrooper characters can get new uniforms, while the rest of the classes will have to wait a bit for variations to be added in future updates.

New ammo types for vehicles

In this update we have started to add more ammo types for the vehicles, plus we have updated the user interface, to make it easier to see which ammo types you have available, how fast it reloades and how you change between them when you’re engaged in battle. It’s not all vehicles that now have more ammo types available, but try to log in and see if there are new explosive toys available for your favourite vehicle. In the coming updates we’ll add more.

Heroes & Generals coming soon to Steam

Oster is online!

The new build named Oster (after the German Major General Hans Oster) is live on the servers! So that you know what to look out for when you jump in, here’s a short update explaining the new features we’ve added for you to enjoy!

New Features

Mechanized Recon – New AT and New Vehicles

A new Assault Team makes its way onto the field of battle. Mechanized Recon – these recon ATs can not only help generals by spotting enemies from afar, but also deliver a considerable punch to lightly armored enemies in the action game. If you want to know more about the newly added SdKfz 222 & M8 Greyhound, take a look here.

New weapons

Fresh weapons! The Oster build also introduces the MG34 German light machine gun as well as the American M1918 Automatic Rifle. But that’s not all, the factory-fresh German Panzerschreck also makes an appearance on battlefields everywhere.

Updated weapon mods and tweaks

In addition to adding the above-mentioned new weapons, we have also gone through all the weapons and weapon mods, improving balancing between modded weapons and combat badges so everything now plays better, and fixing existing bugs. Ohh! And we’ve also given the hand grenades a boost so they are more effective and work much better in clearing rooms. You can read more about the updated weapons, mods & grenades here.

Hero Iteration

Another new exciting addition is a major update on how your character handles in the action game. This should give you a much better sense of where your character is in the environment as well as improving how the camera works, how aiming works and generally tightening the coupling between what you see and what the enemy sees on the screen. You can read more about the hero iteration here.

There is of course much more happening in the build, so continue reading for more details…

Ready for Fresh Blood?

Pretty soon we’re going to be getting underway with a mammoth undertaking, as we prepare to push the big red button on a range of operations designed to drive greater interest in our special little home we like to call Heroes & Generals.

Which means you lot are going to have lots more people to shoot at.
It involves a big server migration, as we first mentioned earlier this month – but now all the plans are locked down we wanted to share more details, so you can see the scale of the project at hand.
Here’s what we’re improving:

  • Server stability – better hardware means fewer crashes and a smoother experience
  • Security – further safeguards to personal information
  • Performance – particularly on the campaign map… which we’re very happy about
  • Overall scalability – so moah players doesn’t mean moah laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag

The server migration will now be taking place on Monday 27th January 2014. During this migration, the servers will be down for approximately 10-12 hours, starting at around 0900 CET (click here to see when this is in your time zone), so you’ll be unable to play the game during this time.
Looking slightly further ahead, we’ve got a shiny new website waiting in the wings – we’re expecting deployment on Friday 31st and we’re looking forward to bringing everything together in a way that makes it easier to navigate. Here’s a sneak peek to give you an idea of the look and feel of things ahead of the switch:

Following the new site launch, the next part of the plan is a big change to our customer support structure on March 5th, better enabling us to look after soldiers who run into trouble in the line of duty.

So thanks for your ongoing support – there are big, big days ahead for Heroes & Generals, and we’re very glad to have you along for the ride.

Newgarden is online!

The new build named Newgarden (after the American Major General Paul Newgarden) is live on the servers! And here is a short update explaining the new features we’ve added for you to enjoy!

New Features

Character Progression and new Combat Ribbons & Badges

The biggest new feature in this build is the brand new Character Progression Tree! Now all new heroes start out as infantrymen and as you capture points, kill enemies and gain experience your hero will climb in rank. Whilst moving through these ranks, your hero will be offered the opportunity to branch off and join the armour forces, recon or the air force, as well as unlocking the ability to use more advanced weapons and equipment. If you want to know more, you can take a look at our special videolog here and you can take a look at these blog posts: Character Progression Part 1, Part 2 & Part 3.

NB: For specific information on how the conversion of existing characters work take a look here.

New Airfield Map

The old Airfield has been closed for takeoff and landing and a brand new Airfield map is here! It is now a much more fully-fledged and exciting map with multiple attack routes, and will require some tactical thinking when choosing a direction for attack. If you want to know more about the Airfield map read along here: Part 1 & Part 2.

New game interface

We have worked our way through the game and updated the interface and streamlined the look and layout. Mainly the interface is now split into a ‘Heroes’ and a ‘Generals’ section to help you see where to depending on what you want to do. We will continue to work on the interface to make it more accessible, more consistent and easier to use.

New Pz.I & Pz.III textures

On a smaller scale, we have also updated the textures and shaders on the Panzer I and the Panzer III and in the coming builds we will continue to polish vehicles to make sure they look as good as possible. You can see a couple of pictures of the new versions here. And as the commander of the Panzer III was done emptying the crate full of cake he had momentarily placed on top of his turret, he of course removed it, so it wouldn’t block his viewports. ;-)

Improved Low Quality Render

We have also updated the “low quality” render to give a graphical boost to lower-end machines. This will raise the minimum requirements a tiny bit, but more than makes up for it by making the low quality setting look so much better. Read more and see a few example screenshots here.

There is of course much more happening in the build, so continue reading for more details…

Manstein is online!

The new build named Manstein (after the German Field Marshall Erich von Manstein) is live on the servers! And here is a short update explaining the new features we have added for you to enjoy!

New Features

New Mountain Map

We have updated the Mountain Map with about 200% more mountain and a lot of improvements to how the map is constructed behind the scenes. This makes updating and adjusting easier, so we can make sure the map stays as fun as possible over time without turning level designer’s hair gray.
Take a look here for screenshots and additional details.

Destruction

“Enough with these fences everywhere! Destroy them!” That is how it sounded here at HQ, so we can now destroy fences by crushing them with tanks, shooting them or by having things explode next to them. Click the link for more details (and a few splinters).

Asset Streaming & Partial-State Update

Behind this cryptic sounding point hides two very important features. Asset Streaming lets us load assets (textures now, models & modifications & vehicles in the future) into a running action game. Streaming also adds a layer of performance optimization on graphics adapters without tons of onboard memory as explained here. The Partial State Update is a new generation of the network code handling how your game communicates with the servers. This lets the game send smaller packages and gives a better game experience for all players, but especially those further away from the servers. More Techy info here.

Mounted MG34 & Weapons Sounds

In addition to improving the game’s performance we have also added a new weapon. The MG34 has been added as the mounted machinegun of choice on a couple of German vehicles and we have added the first batch of the new weapon sounds (with more to come).

Fog of War

In Manstein we introduce fog of war for the first time. This is mainly relevant for Generals as it now only let’s them see what their Assault Teams can see. Take a look here for more information!

There are of course more happening in the build, so continue reading for more details…
