The Sound of Explosions

Explosions are of course an important part of our game so we need to have many different sounding explosions. When you play the game you will learn to distinguish between the different explosions and it will help you decide whether you should run, take cover or stay and fight.

In the video blog below you can hear examples of many different explosions that are currently in the game. Please bear in mind that what you see and hear is a game in alpha-stage, it is not the final game.

I posted this comment already on the moddb-page but since KenSolo once suggested me to post here I will do that.
(although I haven’t received an answer on my first comment concerning objective-highlighting. I suppose I was just too late on that topic :))
Anyhow here my post from moddb-page:
    >>
I’m sorry but I’m not totally convinced with those sounds.

First of all I really think it’s annoying if you can here the grenade bouncing on and off the floor like it was made out of wood and falling onto wood and not onto grass or dirt (where it actually won’t bounce but land and stuck. I wasn’t in war but I’m quite sure you haven’t actually heard the grenade bouncing.
I could understand if you put that feature in to “warn” enemies of that grenade but I really don’t like it.

Secondly I rather like explosions with a slight touch of bass. It’s most certainly subjective but I think the explosion sounds are a bit too high-pitched. Especially the explosion sounds of vehicle-destruction and landmines!

Nevertheless I like the echo of the sounds. It’s smoothly fading out and not cutting out sharply. Would be great if you could adjust the sounds and make them a bit more low-pitched with a slight bass.

grenades do bounce off dirt, unless its mud or something, but the sound should be changed to a more subtle one

Totaly agree with you on the falling grenade part, will see what the devs sayis about it.I realy don’t want to this game to have children play sounds!Best of luck!

Hi all! Thank you so much for all the comments and feedback on the sounds so far. It is great to be a part of a team that develop a game for a community that takes what you do serious, thanks.

I will try to explain (make excuses for) why the sounds sound the way they do.

Right now the sound of the hand grenades bouncing is a placeholder sound. It only has one purpose, to “warn” enemies like KeMoN states. When the sound is final it will sound different when it hits different materials and the volume of the sound will depend on how hard it hits the material.

For the large explosions we plan to add a low-pitched rumble noise to give these sounds more punch and bass. It will (hopefully) give the sounds what some of you feel is missing.

Again, thank you for your comments. And for those of you with an alpha-key, I hope to see you later today playing the game.

It’s really nice to see that effort is actually spent on sound and not only on exaggerated shiny graphics.

I’m totally fine and satisfied with this feature now by hearing of its actual purpose and that the bouncing sound will be modified in several different ways! I suppose I open another point of discussion with that but nevertheless I’m going to mention it. If you have the bouncing sound and maybe a slight effect (like a trail) so you can see the flying grenade, I hope there will be no grenade-danger-indicator like in CoD and all its remakes. It kind of makes grenades useless in my opinion.

I totally agree with you with no grenade danger indicator and to be realistic I think they should get ride off slight efect of the nades, but I trust them for the final decision!
