Each week we’ll feature one of the developers from the team and tell you a bit about who they are and what they are working on.
First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals?
Reto.Goonstah. My real name, Hakon, is a bit unusual, and some people have had problems getting it right. Goonstah is one of the mutations that it went through, and I’ve been using that nick for quite a while now.
What is your position at Reto-Moto?
Programmer and technical lead. I do work on a lot of different bits and pieces.
For how long have you been working here?
I was part of the group that created Reto-Moto in its current form in 2007.
What games have you worked on?
I worked on the Hitman series (all of them) as programmer and later technical producer. Also did some work on Freedom Fighters and Kane & Lynch. I was also at Nintendo subsidiary Genius Sonority for a while and worked on a game that, unfortunately, was never released.
Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
It’s a long list! I use Visual Studio for most of the C/C++/C# work. Flash Builder, FlashDevelop and Flash CS3 for flash and Notepad++ for other languages.
On the graphics side, i use XSI and Photoshop. Not that i make a lot of art assets for the game, but it’s nice to be able to make your own things to test with.
Other than that, I’m using the usual suite of desktop and network tools (Firefox, Thunderbird, Google docs, Putty, NX, Wireshark etc.)
What are your hobbies?
I have a strong passion for music. Both playing and listening. And, needless to say, games.
What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
The combination of real-time FPS combat and the grand strategy campaign. I really think it will give players a strong sense of being part of the epic war. Every kill and every victory will matter.
What’s the best thing about working at Reto-Moto?
We’re completely independent. We don’t have any partners or owners that have their own agenda. Everything we do has to do with Heroes and Generals. We don’t have to worry about someone else’s fiscal year or brand or distribution deals or shelf space or… you get the picture :) We do have investors, but they’re supporting us all the way.
What are you working on right now?
The retox browser plugin, which is a small piece of code that lets the strategy game launch the action game. I’m working on some really dry stuff, like improved communication between the FPS and browser-based parts of the game. Soon, I’ll put some work into the defence setup, which is a sort of level editor that lets players put various objects in the combat maps. Stuff like concrete bunkers, sandbags, road blocks, minefields, machineguns positions, AA guns, maybe artillery.
What are your favorite games of all time?
Fallout 1+2, Civilization 4 and System Shock 2 are some of my favorites.
What are your favorite movies?
I really don’t know; I’m not a big movie buff. Saw Sucker Punch the other day and quite enjoyed it.
