Newgarden Feature: Hit Feedback Sounds

The Newgarden build is here, and it brings a neat improvement in the audio department: hit feedback sounds to let you know when you have succesfully wounded an enemy. Actually, it’s a little bit more than just new sound effects.

Urgh!

If you’ve been playing Heroes & Generals these past few days, you may already have noticed that enemy characters now scream or groan when your bullets hit them. These are specific sound effects that are triggered when you score a hit. They differ from other sound effects in three ways:

  • only you can hear them;
  • you can hear them regardless of distance;
  • this is the most important part: these sound effects only play when a hit is confirmed by the game server

Whereas the sounds of gunfire or approaching vehicles are triggered locally when your game client determines that you are close enough to the source to hear them, the “urgh!” of a wounded enemy is only played when the game server sends a confirmation that you hit someone. This means that, even with a bad connection, you will not hear this sound unless your hit counts. This also means you can shoot through thick fog at unseen soldiers and know for certain when your bullets find their target.

    Impressive. More voice related sounds is good. It would sorta give the game abit more life, bc fighting silent clones aren’t exactly satisfying enough.

    Please fix the cars and APC hitpoints, is not possible what a car be so delicate, the car are exploding by nothing, and another thing is car dissapearing, that makes no sense, please stop dissapearing cars, if i die in a car another person could use it. Anyways your cars are so delicate what will not resist forever.

    More resistance for cars and APC, and please, only total destruction could dissapear a vehicle.

    Well I hate both the huge blood splatters and the ugh sound XD breaks immersion, this comment worries me “only you can hear them, you can hear them regardless of distance;” reto should not be proud of breaking immersion or adding unrealistic features when this were not really asked for community or anyone was missing them.

    The uncertain of shooting an enemy while you are not sure you killed him or think you killed and he you didn’t is a fun features that adds strategy to the game.

    It would be better that the hit confirmation would be the blood splatter effect and the ugh would only play to those near the dead target like it happens in the rest of multiplayer fps, this game is running away from realism and historical context it won’t end up well if it continues in this road.

      The uncertainty of shooting an enemy and not knowing if killed him is a fun features that adds strategy of the fps game.

      It would be better that the hit confirmation would be the blood splatter effect and the ugh would only play to those near the dead target like it happens in the rest of multiplayer fps, this game is sprinting away from realism and historical context it won’t end up well if it continues in this road.

    Why add fog if reto doesn’t want it to affect gameplay ?

    Probably should have just added traditional hit marker instead. It would have been much more subtle than these “Oww!” and “Ooh” that you can hear clearly from 1km distance. The guy is several times smaller than iron sights when I aim at him. I can’t hear him shoot, but I can hear him groan? I actually thought it was a bug until now.

    I was really hoping it was just incomplete or bug that you can hear it regardless of distance. :(

    Just some thoughts which could possibly be a more realistic solution:

    1) Remove both of these effects and instead add a text like the one we see in the bottom center part of the screen when we penetrate armor (“Armor penetrated” – “Enemy hit”). Make this happen only when enemy player is more than 50 (or whatever number seems right, you should know better) meters away. Also, after the battle is over include the list of all successful hits in the battle stats screen that appears.

    2) Modify sound effect and remove blood splatter effect. Instead of blood splatter effect add a text like the one we see in the bottom center part of the screen when we penetrate armor (“Armor penetrated” – “Enemy hit”). Make this text appear only when the enemy player is more than 50 (or whatever number seems right, you should know better) meters away, but when the enemy is closer than that, the current “D’oh” sound can be heard. Also, after the battle is over include the list of all successful hits in the battle stats screen that appears.

    3) Do the same as 2) but instead modify the splatter effect and remove the sound effect.

    Thx Reto! I have only 1Mbit/second here and for me it is a big improvement to get hit confirmation from server.

What are you waiting for soldier? We need heroes on the battlefield and generals to lead them!
