First of all, what is your gamertag in Heroes & Generals, and what’s the story?
Reto.sNell – A play on my name and the german word for ‘fast’ (misspelled).
What is your position at Reto-Moto?
For how long have you been working here?
Since December 1st, so not very long. I am still finding my way around the code.
What games have you worked on?
None that people would know of. A mod for UT3 called The Witching Hour that died when UDK was released, and an artsy game about growing plants, as well as some GameJam games. So this is my plunge into professional game programming.
Which tools do you use for making Heroes & Generals?
Since we are developing for two platforms, we use MonoTouch and Mono for Android. This allows us to write everything in C#, and share a fair amount of game logic code across platforms. Apple’s rules means that the iOS version has to be built on a Mac, so I work on both OSX and Windows.
What are your hobbies?
Gaming, gardening, hiking, food, beer, and wine, music.
What’s the best thing about Heroes & Generals?
The game makes you feel that you’re influencing the outcome of something greater than yourself. Winning a battle as Hero really feels like it has more purpose than just frags, and sending in troops as General feels cool too, since you know it will influence the experience of other players.
What’s the best thing about working at Reto-Moto?
The large amount of freedom in the day-to-day work, and the people here. Just the right amount of geek culture.
What are you working on right now?
Work on the mobile clients has been done by an external company up until now, so right now I’m shaping the applications up for their first release while figuring out how everything works in the system. Also, I attend meetings where we discuss the changes we’d like to make to the strategy game.
What are your favorite games of all time?
The original XCOM, Dune II, Colonization, Baldur’s Gate, Mount & Blade Warband with C-RPG mod, DOTA, Quake II Action and loads of others.
What is your favorite movies?
That’s tough. 12 Monkeys is definitely high on the list, but other than that, I’d rather name Shows. The Wire, Battlestar Galactica, Deadwood, that sort of thing.
